Mac internet connection help?

My Mac powerbook (bought in 2004) is giving me trouble connecting to the internet (wireless). I know our wireless works because my boyfriend gets perfect web reception all the time. Is there a way to fix/improve my powerbook so that it will connect

1) Go the router and get your self a static IP
2) apply the patches and updates to your OS
