When my desktop computer is plugged in to the internet, the wireless internet on my laptop stops working?

so what im saying is...
the modem is plugged into the desktop computer.
the laptop is on and connecting to the modem wirelessly, but at 1.0mbps which isnt enough to even load a page.

Sounds like the desktop gains priority over the other devices..go into your router settings..
