I have 5.1 Creative speakers If I upgrade to sound card supporting 7.1 speakers will 5.1 work with 7.1 card?

I have a Creative external 24 bit Audidgy sound card & 5.1 Creative speakers. If I upgrade to Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Elite Pro which supports 7.1 speakers will the 5.1 speakers work with 7.1 supporting sound card, or will I lose sound quality?

Of course, only less cables to connect...
