How can I control a power outlet via computer software?

I have a 1-wire temperature monitoring network and would like to have software control the fans around the house. I can do the software end of it no problem but my problem is this:
How can I control a power outlet from the computer?

use an intelligent Power distribution Unit(PDU) that can be connected to a computer through a RJ45 connetor cable. the PDU has many power outlet sockets which can be connected to few electrical appliances. each outlet can be indiviually controlled using
