Stop unneeded computer processes?

I own a very old Dell Dimension 4700, bought some years ago, with only 256 MB of Memory/RAM/whatever it's called. I cannot afford to buy a new computer. I do plan on buying more RAM sticks but due to my low budget I can't afford much right now, but until


The best way to get rid of some of those processes would be:

Go to Start > run > msconfig

Select the services tab and click on hide all microsoft processes (some if you disable, it might crash the system)
